5 Reasons Your Breasts Are Sagging & What to Do About It

Some degree of breast sagging is inevitable. It’s just a fact of life for women.

Whether we like it or not, our breasts lose some of their perk over time as our skin loses its elasticity. As our breasts begin to droop, we gain a new silhouette – one we may or may not be comfortable with.

As this process occurs, many women look for ways to prevent sagging in order to keep their pair perky. There are a variety of factors that can contribute to breast sagging – some of which are entirely out of our control. But while there’s no way to stop the sagging of breasts entirely, there are a few things you can do to help your breasts stay firm and healthy.

What’s Causing My Breasts to Sag?

As mentioned, there are a number of things that can contribute to the gradual sagging of breasts. Some are things we have control over, while others we do not.

Here, we’ll review some of the major contributors to breast sag, and what – if anything – can be done to combat them.

Genetics

Studies have found that heredity may contribute to how your breasts change as you age. If your mom or grandmother experienced sagging, chances are you will too.

What to do about it?

You can’t change your genes, so if you’re predisposed to breast sagging based on your family history there’s not anything you can do to combat that specific factor.

Aging

As time goes by, the collagen in your breasts becomes less elastic and more stretched out, resulting in your breasts losing some of their perk. Your entire body changes as you age, so it should come as no surprise that your breasts succumb to the pull of gravity and evolve as well.

What to do about it?

With each passing birthday, the connective tissue under you skin continues to stretch and gradually loses its ability to bounce back. As a result, as you age, breast sagging will likely continue to progress. Since there’s no way to stop time or gravity, this specific factor is another one that’s unavoidable.

Pregnancy

Because women’s breasts change significantly during pregnancy, particularly in terms of size, pregnancy has been cited as another factor that contributes to sagging bosoms. Contrary to what many believe, however, breastfeeding has not been found to cause increased sagging.

What to do about it?

Women don’t have control over how their breasts evolve during and after pregnancy, so if you’re planning to have children, or if you’ve already had children, this is another factor that can’t really be changed.

One thing you can do, however, is make sure that you’re wearing supportive bras that fit well throughout the duration of your pregnancy, adjusting size and style to provide additional support as your breast size changes.

Lack of Support

Gravity is constantly pulling downward on breasts, which contributes to the loss of elasticity in breast tissue, ultimately causing sagging. If you’re breasts aren’t properly supported, they can have a harder time combating the forces of gravity, which can result in more extensive sagging.

What to do about it?

Go get properly fitted for a bra! Believe it or not, most women are wearing the wrong bra size! A professional bra fitting can help immensely when it comes to finding a bra that fits and properly supports your breasts, which can help to slow down the sagging process.

Crash Dieting (Recurring Weight Gain & Weight Loss)

Crash dieting that results in repeated weight loss and weight gain can contribute to the loss of elasticity in breast tissue, which can cause breasts to sag and lose their ability to bounce back. The stretching skin and decreased breast volume that results from yo-yo dieting can do a number on your breasts.

What to do about it?

Do your best to avoid crash diets and dieting fads that may cause your weight to fluctuate significantly. Instead, try to maintain a healthy, consistent weight and if you lose weight, do your best to keep it off. Your breasts will thank you.

I’m Unhappy With My Breasts. What Options Do I Have?

If some of these factors have already taken their toll on your body, don’t fret! Even if you can’t combat some of them as they’re impacting you, you have options after the fact that can help you achieve your ideal image.

Breast Augmentation

For recovering lost volume, breast augmentation may be a terrific option. This procedure can help you to achieve an enhanced breast appearance, and is particularly helpful for women who are looking to increase their breast size.

Breast Lift

A breast lift might be the ideal procedure if you’re hoping to recover your more youthful silhouette by raising and reshaping breast tissue. This procedure can help you regain your ideal image by combating the damage that has been caused by the factors listed above.
