What Is KYBELLA And How Does It Work?
KYBELLA™ is a prescription medicine used to improve moderate to severe fat below the chin. Its active ingredient, Deoxycholic Acid, breaks down fat cells permanently. Deoxycholic acid is a naturally occurring molecule in the body that aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. When injected into the fat beneath the chin, KYBELLA® destroys fat cells, and once destroyed, these cells can no longer store or accumulate fat. This results in a noticeable reduction in fullness under the chin, revealing an improved chin profile.
Who Is A Good Candidate?
Adults with firm skin and fat below their chin that can be pinched with their fingers are typically good candidates. As this product will not help saggy skin, patients with very lax skin may not be good candidates. We recommend a consultation prior to your treatment to ensure you will achieve success with KYBELLA™.
What Happens During The Treatment And How Long Does It Take?
Your neck and chin area may be marked and then a topical anesthetic is applied to ensure comfort during the treatment. You will be in the treatment room for 20-30 minutes while the topical agent takes effect, but the injection part of the procedure takes only about 5 minutes. At each treatment, you will receive multiple small injections under your chin into the fat layer below the skin. The exact number of injections will depend on the amount of fat you have under your chin and your desired profile. After the injection is complete, the area is cleaned and a cold compress is applied to minimize swelling. Patient may continue to apply cold compresses every 2 hours for 15-20 minutes at a time during the first day.
How Many Treatments Will I Need?
Since everyone’s chin profile is different, the number of treatments varies from patient to patient. Many patients experience visible contouring of their chin profile in two to four treatment sessions, the average number of treatment sessions is three. Dr. Garcia will customize your KYBELLA™ treatment regimen, including how many treatments you need, based on your desired chin profile. He will give you a series of injections at each treatment session, which are spaced at least a month apart. Up to 6 treatments may be administered.
How Long Do Results Last?
Once the fat cells are gone, they are gone for good! When injected into the fat under your chin, KYBELLA™ causes the destruction of fat cells. Once destroyed, those cells cannot store or accumulate fat. After the aesthetic response is achieved, retreatment with KYBELLA™ is not expected.
How Should I Prepare For My KYBELLA Treatment?
- To reduce the risk of bruising and swelling, avoid taking aspirin, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications, St. John’s Wort, or high doses of Vitamin E supplements for one week prior to treatment, consult your primary physician before discontinuing any normally prescribed medications. Dr. Garcia also recommends taking Arnica Montana for three days prior to your treatment to reduce the risk of bruising and swelling. Do not use Arnica if you have active heart disease, uncontrolled high blood pressure, or are taking Coumadin, Lovenox, Heparin, or xeralto. If you have a medical condition that affects clotting or are on a medication which affects bloods clotting, you must get your primary care doctor’s approval before taking arnica.
- The treatment area, the neck and under the chin, should be clean shaven the morning of the treatment.
- You may take 600 mg of Ibuprofen 1 hour before your treatment to minimize swelling and discomfort.
