What Is The Difference Between BOTOX® Cosmetic And JUVÉDERM® XC?

Both BOTOX® Cosmetic and JUVÉDERM® XC are ways to treat moderate to severe facial lines and wrinkles. Both are non-surgical, but they work differently:

  • BOTOX® Cosmetic is typically used to treat “Dynamic Wrinkles”, which are cause by when muscles contract to make facial expressions such as smiles and frowns. Botox is injected beneath the skin’s surface to target the underlying muscle activity which is one of the causes of moderate to severe lines between the brows, forehead and crow’s feet. BOTOX® Cosmetic temporarily reduces the activity of those muscles resulting in improved lines between the brows, forehead and Crow’s feet.
  • JUVÉDERM® XC is typically used to treat “Static Wrinkles”, which develop because our skin’s natural substances (such as collagen and hyaluronic acid), which provide structure and volume, decrease over time. Juvederm is injected into the skin to temporarily smooth moderate to severe wrinkles and folds, such as those around the nose and mouth.

When Will I See Results?

You may start to see changes as quickly as three weeks after your CoolSculpting treatment, and will experience the most dramatic results after two months. But your body will still flush out fat cells and continues doing so for up to four to six months after treatment.  Individual results may vary.

What Is JUVÉDERM®?

JUVÉDERM® is a non-surgical filler, made from a modified form of hyaluronic acid (HA), used by Dr. Garcia to smooth lines and enhance lips. HA is a naturally occurring substance found in your skin. As you age, you start to lose HA, which causes the skin to lose structure and volume, contributing to the formation of wrinkles and folds.

What Happens If I Gain Weight In The Future?

Many people, after seeing the results from their CoolSculpting procedure, take even better care of themselves. However, if you do gain weight, you may gain it more evenly all over your body, not just in the treated areas.

Why Should I Consider JUVÉDERM®?

As you age, your skin loses HA resulting in facial wrinkles and folds, like those “parentheses” lines around your mouth. Juvederm can also be used to enhance the lips, improving the definition of the lip lines or adding more volume. Talk with Dr. Garcia to find out if Juvederm is for you.

Is There Pain During Or After The Procedure? Are There Side Effects Or Down Time?

CoolSculpting has no down time! It is safe and completely non-invasive which allows immediate return to work, exercise and other normal activities. Although there may be some minor discomfort during the first 10 minutes as the fat is drawn into the applicator and cooled, no pain medication or anesthetic is needed. The procedure is comfortable enough to read, work on a laptop, listen to music with headphones or take a nap during the procedure. Afterwards patients experience redness which usually lasts minutes to hours. Some patients may experience bruising and/or tenderness, cramping and/or itching for 1 to 2 weeks and a temporary dulling of sensation for 1 or more weeks.

What Are The Injection-Related Side Effects Of JUVÉDERM®?

Side effects associated with the injection include localized pain, inflammation, tenderness, swelling, redness and or bleeding/bruising. The mild redness and swelling at the injection site is temporary.

What Is KYBELLA And How Does It Work?

KYBELLA™ is a prescription medicine used to improve moderate to severe fat below the chin. Its active ingredient, Deoxycholic Acid, breaks down fat cells permanently. Deoxycholic acid is a naturally occurring molecule in the body that aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. When injected into the fat beneath the chin, KYBELLA® destroys fat cells, and once destroyed, these cells can no longer store or accumulate fat. This results in a noticeable reduction in fullness under the chin, revealing an improved chin profile.

How Can I Reduce My Risks Of Bleeding Or Bruising From JUVÉDERM®?

Patients may want to avoid taking aspirin, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications, St. John’s Wort, or high doses of Vitamin E supplements for one week prior to treatment, consult your primary physician before discontinuing any normally prescribed medications. Dr. Garcia also recommends taking Arnica Montana for three days prior to your treatment to reduce the risk of bruising and swelling.

Do not use Arnica if you have active heart disease, uncontrolled high blood pressure, or are taking Coumadin, Lovenox, Heparin, or xeralto. If you have a medical condition that affects clotting or are on a medication which affects bloods clotting, you must get your primary care doctor’s approval before taking arnica.

Who Is A Good Candidate?

Adults with firm skin and fat below their chin that can be pinched with their fingers are typically good candidates. As this product will not help saggy skin, patients with very lax skin may not be good candidates. We recommend a consultation prior to your treatment to ensure you will achieve success with KYBELLA™.

How Long Do The Results Of JUVÉDERM® Last?

Depending on the treatment area, most patients experience results for six to twelve months; your own results may vary. Dr. Garcia recommends enhancing your results with proper skin care. Our practice offers a full line of Authentic SkinMedica Skin Care Products.

What Happens During The Treatment And How Long Does It Take?

Your neck and chin area may be marked and then a topical anesthetic is applied to ensure comfort during the treatment. You will be in the treatment room for 20-30 minutes while the topical agent takes effect, but the injection part of the procedure takes only about 5 minutes. At each treatment, you will receive multiple small injections under your chin into the fat layer below the skin.  The exact number of injections will depend on the amount of fat you have under your chin and your desired profile.  After the injection is complete, the area is cleaned and a cold compress is applied to minimize swelling.  Patient may continue to apply cold compresses every 2 hours for 15-20 minutes at a time during the first day.

What Can I Expect During A JUVÉDERM® Injection Procedure?

After a topical numbing agent is applied, Dr. Garcia injects JUVÉDERM® under your skin using a fine needle to instantly smooth out the wrinkles and folds on your face, or to instantly add volume to the lips. Dr. Garcia chooses to use JUVÉDERM® XC in his treatments, which is formulated with lidocaine for a more comfortable treatment experience.

How Many Treatments Will I Need?

Since everyone’s chin profile is different, the number of treatments varies from patient to patient.  Many patients experience visible contouring of their chin profile in two to four treatment sessions, the average number of treatment sessions is three. Dr. Garcia will customize your KYBELLA™ treatment regimen, including how many treatments you need, based on your desired chin profile. He will give you a series of injections at each treatment session, which are spaced at least a month apart. Up to 6 treatments may be administered.

How Long Does A JUVÉDERM® Injection Treatment Take?

Once the topical anesthetic is applied, you will want to allow 30 minutes for the topical to take effect. Depending on the number of areas to be treated, the injection time may vary from 15 minutes to 30 minutes or more. Touch-up injections as well as repeat injections are usually needed to maintain optimal results. Less gel is usually needed for repeat injections.

How Long Do Results Last?

Once the fat cells are gone, they are gone for good! When injected into the fat under your chin, KYBELLA™ causes the destruction of fat cells. Once destroyed, those cells cannot store or accumulate fat. After the aesthetic response is achieved, retreatment with KYBELLA™ is not expected.

What Can Micro-Needling Do For Me?

Micro-needling treatments result in an improvement in skin tone & texture, “glowing” skin, reduced pore size, improvement in acne scars and a reduction in fine lines & wrinkles, including smoker’s lines.  Micro-needling may also be used to treat hyperpigmentation, acne, hypertrophic scars and much more.

What Areas Can Micro-Needling Treat?

Micro-needling treatments can be done for a number of areas, the most common treatment areas include the face, neck and the hands.

How Long Does It Take To See Results From Micro-Needling?

Most patients see results after the first treatment. Individual results vary depending on individual skin health. It is most common to begin to see true changes or positive results as soon as 1-2 weeks after the first treatment. Many patients comment on positive changes in even less time. (Often change is noted within just a few days.)

How Long Do The Results Of Micro-Needling Last?

Micro-needling produces results through the stimulation of growth factors and collagen, thereby promoting new skin cells to surface. As our skin ages, our collagen production naturally slows down. Your overall result will last longer when using an at home skin care regimen that includes daily Retinol use. New collagen & elastin formation in the skin are documented as visually and measurably improved as much as one year after just one treatment. However, a series of treatments is typically recommended for best results.

What Is The Method Of Application For Micro-Needling?

A sterile disposable needle cartridge, holding 12-36 micro needles is glided across the skin with the device that mechanically induces a micro injury to the desired depth chosen for your skin by your medical provider. Micro channels are created which allows topicals and serums to reach the true targeted areas, producing a much more effective result.

Will The Micro-Needling Hurt?

Prior to your treatment, a topical numbing agent is applied. Most people say they feel almost nothing after having been pretreated with a topical numbing agent.

Can I Use Makeup After Having My Micro-Needling Treatment?

Immediately after your treatment we recommend using only mineral based foundation, as it does not build bacteria. You may go back to your regular foundation 4 days post treatment.

What Will I Look Like Immediately After My Treatment?

Immediately after your treatment you will notice a bright redness to the skin. You may also experience skin tightness and mild sensitivity to touch on the areas being treated. Post-treatment products are available in our office to minimize these symptoms and to enhance results.

Is There Any Downtime After A Micro-Needling Treatment?

Immediately after your treatment you will notice a bright redness to the skin. Some patients are able to apply mineral makeup and go out to dinner the same day. You may notice some dryness and skin tightness during the first four days. Some patients may also experience peeling of the skin for 3-5 days after the treatment. Post-treatment products are available in our office to minimize these symptoms and to enhance results.
